Columbus State Cheerleading Has Outstanding Weekend at
Nationals
Orlando, FL – The Columbus State cheerleading team
represented the University in grand fashion over the weekend in
Orlando as the Small Co-Ed along with the partner stunt duo of
Tommy Goforth and Ali Anderson claimed national championships.
The Large Co-Ed team and the couple of Jason Riel and Chelsie
Horton placed second in their respective competitions while Jon Lee
and Cassidy Drysdale took home fourth in the partner stunt
event.
“We had a tremendous weekend at nationals where everything
fell into place,” said head cheerleading coach Jimbo Davis.
“I was at a loss for words when we had three of the top
four in the stunt event, then we win the small co-ed national
championship and our large team executed the routine. I am
happy we were able to represent the University and athletic
department in such a great fashion.”
The Small Co-Ed team won their fourth national championship in
school history after receiving an automatic bid by placing first in
the qualifying round. The University of Southern Indiana was
the runner-up followed by Iowa Western Community College.
Wilmington University and Riverside City College rounded out
the top 5. The Large Co-Ed team finished second behind the
University of West Georgia after entering the competition as the
third seed.
Goforth and Anderson became just the second non-Division I couple
to win the event, following the steps of CSU assistant cheerleading
coach Andy Brown, who was part of the first duo to win the
competition as a non-Division I pair in 2002.
Overall CSU claimed three of the top four sports in the partner
stunt competition.
