Cougars Smash 19 Hits in 14-2 Season-Opening Win over West Georgia

Columbus, Ga. -- Columbus State newcomers Eric Weiss and Jason Rogers led a 19-hit Cougar offensie onslaught as CSU took a 14-2 win over visiting West Georgia in the 2010 baseball season opener at Ragsdale Field on Wednesday. Weiss and Rogers each collected four hits in the game.
Weiss got the Cougar scoring off and running in the second inning when he took a pitch from Wolves starter Kyle Parris into the softball field beyond the right field wall for a solo homerun. The Cougars would then add five runs in the third inning, with Weiss knocking in another with a single to take a 6-0 lead. The big hit of the frame was a two-run double by second-baseman Scoop Pharr.
CSU added four more runs in the fourth inning. Mitch Rider's double scored Rogers to start the scoring in the inning. Ryan Lewis and Weiss each had RBI hits and Cameron Griffin plated another run with a sacrifice fly.
The Cougars completed their scoring in the fifth with four runs. Wes Adkins doubled in a run and Lewis added two more with a double. Weiss drove in his fourth run with a double down the left field line to make it 14-1 at the time.
West Georgia scored single runs in the fifth and sixth - the last coming on Blake Parrott's solo shot to left-center.
David Lane earned the win with five solid innings for the Cougars. The senior right-hander fanned six and allowed just four hits and two runs. Relievers Brian Satterfield and Jordan Freeman pitched two innings each and did not allow a run.
In addition to Weiss and Rogers, Lewis had three hits and the Cougars got two each from Pharr and Eric Skinner.

The Cougars return to action this weekend as they begin a three-game series at West Alabama in Livingston with single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
