Solid Pitching Carries Cougars to Sweep of Saint Leo on Sunday

Columbus, Ga. -- A pair of CSU starting pitchers made quick work of the Saint Leo Lions at Ragsdale Field on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Campbell and Iain Sebastian gave up one run on seven hits combined in the doubleheader sweep. Offensively designated hitter Wes Adkins contributed three hits and drove in four runs. Adkins slammed a solo shot in the opener and a two-run homer in the nightcap.

The Cougars won the opener 3-1 and the nightcap 3-0.

Sebastian flirted with a no-hitter in game two. He faced the minimum through five innings. Lions DH Myron Kirschner broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single to center in the sixth inning.

The single led to Sebastian's only shaky inning. The 6-4 senior left runners on second on third but kept the shutout intact. Brian Satterfield pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the season.

The Lions, now 1-3, struck first in the opener. After Campbell retired the leadoff man, Eugene Garnett slugged the first pitch he faced over the wall in right to give Saint Leo a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars struck quickly and tied the game in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Alex Montes doubled off the base of the wall in center an scored on Adkins' double. CSU took the lead on Adkins' fourth-inning homer and added insurance on Ryan Lewis' seventh-inning homer.

The teams were scheduled to play a three-game series, but Friday's snow forced cancellation of one game and moved Saturday's doubleheader to Sunday.

The Cougars, now 5-2, travel to Carrollton to face the University of West Georgia on Wednesday.
