Cougars Come From Behind Twice to Defeat Auburn-Montgomery 11-9

Montgomery, Ala. -- Columbus State first-baseman Jason Rogers blasted a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning - his second clout of the game - to highlight a four-run inning and bring the Cougars from behind for the second time in the game in an 11-9 road win over Auburn-Montgomery on Tuesday. The win is the ninth in a row for the Cougars, who moved into the Collegiate Baseball Magazine poll at #12 this week.

CSU took an early lead in the game, scoring a run in the first inning without getting a hit. Alex Montes walked, stole second and later came home on bases-loaded walk to Logan Dollar to make it 1-0. AUM answered quickly in the bottom the inning as Jacob Salter's lead-off homerun ignited a four-run rally off CSU starter David Lane. The Senators added two more runs in the second on a two-run single by Bruce Alter to go up 6-1.

Rogers cracked his first homer of the game, a solo shot to left, in the top of the third to make it 6-2. The Cougars cut the margin to 6-3 in the fifth when Eric Skinner's triple to deep right field brought home Ryan Lewis who had reached on a walk. CSU then took the lead with a four-run uprising in the sixth. All the damage came with two outs in the inning as Eric Weiss singled and scored on a Rogers double to right. Dollar followed with a two-run homer, his first of the year, to left field to tie the game. Ryan Lewis then singled off new pitcher Chase Patterson and came around to score on Cameron Griffin's double to left-center to give the Cougars a 7-6 lead.

AUM bounced back with three big runs in the bottom of the eighth. Working against reliever Robby Nettles, the Senators loaded the bases with one out after a walk and after Nettles made an errant throw on Salter's groundball. Reliever Wade Dudley came on and issued an RBI walk to Cody Chizmar to tie the score at 7. A fielding miscue by Skinner at shortstop led to another run and another came home on a groundout to make it 9-7. That set up the big ninth inning by the Cougars.

Dudley got a strikeout and a pair of flyouts in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first win of the year in the closer role. The senior right-hander has yet to allow an earned run. Nettles pitched an inning and a third, allowing one hit and three unearned runs. Lane went six innings and gave up nine hits and six earned runs on the day.

Rogers finished the game three hits and five RBI on the day to lead the Cougars' 13-hit attack. Weiss, Lewis and Skinner added two hits apiece, while Dollar added two RBI, as did Weiss. Alter had three hits to lead AUM (7-7).

CSU (10-2) returns home to host a three-game weekend series with defending Division II national champions Lynn University on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's double header is set for 1 p.m. with a single game scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m.
