Torrid Cougars Win 13th Straight
Columbus, Ga. -- The red hot CSU Cougars notched their 13th straight victory with a 9-1 victory over visiting Urbana at Ragsdale Field on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
After starting the season 1-2, the Cougars are now an impressive 14-2 and ranked eighth among Division II teams by Collegiate Baseball Magazine.
The Cougars utilized the arm of junior hurler Thomas Campbell and the bats of Ryan Lewis and Jason Rogers to secure the victory.
Campbell, now 3-0, got off to a shaky start in the first. He allowed a leadoff hit to Trace Fowler and a pair of walks to load the bases. But Campbell posted two of his 10 strikeouts to escape from the inning unscathed.
The Fowler hit was the only one the Blue Knights managed through the first six innings. A leadoff double in the seventh by Steve Froese and an RBI single by Matt Mays broke up the shutout.
Campbell and the Cougars took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single to Rogers and botched double play ball put two runners on. Lewis blasted a Wes Rehmert pitch over the wall in right center for a 4-1 CSU lead.
The CSU offense wasn't satisfied with a three-run lead. The Cougars added a solo run in the seventh and four in the eighth. The big blow was Rogers' blast with a man aboard. The ball hit a first-floor door on the Cunningham Center balcony beyond left field.
The Cougars and Blue Knights will complete the series with a Sunday afternoon doubleheader beginning at 1 PM.
