Cougars Win School Record 15th Straight

Columbus, Ga. -- The Columbus State Cougars set a school record by recording their 14th and 15th straight victories in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Urbana University at Ragsdale Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars took advantage of solo homers by Merit Hicks and Jason Rogers to blank the Blue Knights 2-0 in game one. CSU won game two in dramatic fashion on a two-out wild pitch by Urbana pitcher Dustin Lacy.

Game two was a challenge for the Cougars. Three pitchers took the mound allowing three earned runs on a total of four hits. Unfortunately, the Cougar bats fell silent and they trailed 2-0 after three innings.

But CSU chipped away at the lead, scoring once each in the fourth and fifth. In the top of the sixth, the Blue Knights went ahead by a run and the Cougars answered in their half of the sixth.

The game went into the seventh and final inning tied 3-3. Reliever Brian Satterfield set the Blue Knights down in order in the top of the inning. Lacy got the first two Cougars out before things started to fall apart for the Urbana starter.

Lacy hit Scoop Pharr with a pitch. Pharr moved to second on a wild pitch and Lacy intentionally walked Rogers. A walk to pinch-hitter Eric Weiss loaded the bases and brought Logan Dollar to the plate.

Lacy's first pitch to Dollar was wild and Pharr raced home with the run that won the game and earned the Cougars a place in CSU baseball history.

The Cougars host Auburn-Montgomery on Tuesday at 6 PM.
