Ryan Lewis, Quincy Gems Prospect League Champions
Quincy, IL - Ryan Lewis helped end the summer on a good note, as the rising senior for Columbus State University caught the last out of the Prospect League Championship game Wednesday night as the Quincy Gems defeated the West Virginia Miners 5-0 to win their second league championship in three seasons.
The Gems struck first in the bottom of the third inning as Bryan Lippincott hit his second homerun off the playoffs to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The game stayed a one-run contest as both starting pitchers put up zeros on the board until the bottom of the eighth.
In the eighth, Lewis contributed to a four-run rally as the centerfielder worked the count 3-2 before drawing a crucial walk. After a Miners pitching change, John Pace roped a double off the right centerfield wall scoring Lewis and three other Miners.
Lewis was one of the last players on the dog pile but it was well worth the wait as he ended the game catching a lazy fly ball in the right centerfield gap. He went 1-for-3 in the championship game with one run scored.
Lewis ended the summer season hitting .271 and scoring 39 runs for the Prospect League Champions. Earlier in the season, he received the most votes among all outfielders for the West Division All-Star team.
