Saint Augustine, FL – Flagler scored the game's final four runs including three in the seventh to complete a 6-5 comeback victory over Columbus State in the first game of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The game took place at Drysdale Field in Saint Augustine, Florida.
After the Cougars scored two runs in the seventh, Flagler stormed back plating three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Tyler Carpenter came on in relief of Cougar starter Brodie Leibrandt. Carpenter hit the first batter he faced before back-to-back singles scored the Saints' first run of the frame.
Carpenter got the second out of the inning on a fly ball before Devon Hellett laced a single to leftfield bringing in another run for FC. Charlie Stewart tied the game at five-all on an infield single.
In the eighth, Nate Fudala greeted Chase Gilreath with a single to leftfield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a grounder advanced him to third, a Gilreath wild pitch allowed Fudala to score the game-winning run.
Columbus State (28-20, 14-14 PBC) scored the game's first run in the first as Cyle Rasmus drew a nine-pitch walk to lead off the game. After a passed ball, J.D. Pullen drove the senior in with a single through the right side of the infield.
The Cougars struck again in the third with Rasmus again starting a rally with a leadoff single. Rasmus caused havoc on the base paths as he stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by FC's catcher Kyle Foti. With one-out, Eric Weiss walked before Brett Teschner roped a double in the right-centerfield gap scoring both runners to give CSU a 3-0 lead.
CSU's defense let them down once again in the bottom of the third as shortstop Kenny Miller dropped a pop fly with one-out and a runner on first. On the next pitch, Brett Moreland singled home Flagler's first run of the game.
Both pitchers would then settle down until the bottom of the sixth when Foti singled to lead off the frame. Foti would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt and later score on a Daniel Stewart RBI single down the rightfield line.
Columbus State played small ball in the seventh and it paid off with two runs. With two-outs, Pullen reached base on a bunt single and then stole second. Weiss would single home Pullen in the next at-bat before stealing second himself. Teschner followed that up with a single to rightfield for his third RBI of the game.
The Cougars would only get one hit in the eight and ninth including going down in order in the last frame.
Brodie Leibrandt did not factor into the decision for the Cougars as he pitched six strong innings. He allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out a pair of batters.
CSU's bullpen allowed four runs in the final two innings.
At the plate, Brett Teschner paced the offensive attack going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in while J.D. Pullen was 2-for-5 with a RBI and a stolen base.
Navarro Hall was 1-for-3 in the game extending his hitting streak to 16 games.
Brett Moreland was 4-for-5 for Flagler (26-21, 12-16) with Daniel Stewart adding three hits and two RBIs for the Saints.
Tyler Ward (3-0) picked up the victory pitching 1.1 perfect innings in relief.
