After fifteen years filling various roles in the Columbus State University athletic department, Jimbo Davis will begin his first year as Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing, Community Relations and Spirit Coordinator. In his expanded role, he will be responsible for the marketing efforts of the athletic department as well as being in charge of the Cougar Club, the department’s booster club. Davis will continue to serve as the cheerleading coach and is again taken the reigns of the dance program this year.
During his first 15 seasons in charge of the cheerleading team, Davis has brought national attention to the team and consistently shows off one of the premier squads in Division II. He led them to their sixth consecutive Peach Belt Conference title in 2010 and their 10th in 11 years. The team also had success on the international level as six members of the Columbus State program brought home a gold medal in the World’s Second Annual Cheerleading Championships hosted by The International Cheer Union.
Davis guided the team to back-to-back National Championships in 2004 and 2005 in the Small Co-Ed Division. The title in ’04 was the first National Championship for the Columbus State cheerleading program. They added another championship to their collection in 2008 while finishing second the past two seasons. The CSU Large Co-Ed squad placed fourth in 2010 and previously had not finished lower then third dating back to 2000. The American Cheerleader Magazine named the Columbus State University program as one of the top 10 teams in the country. The Cougar program was also the recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Achievement Honoree for college programs.
Once again Davis will be in charge of the dance team in hopes of recreating the outstanding program he left in 2002. Under his direction, the dance team won four Peach Belt titles in six years and finished as high as eighth at the Universal Dance Association college nationals.
The Columbus native has been a guest speaker at conferences in regards to cheerleading on the college level and the sport of cheerleading. He has served as a judge on many different levels including international and national competitions.
Davis is a 1992 graduate of Chattahoochee Valley Community College with an associate’s degree in finance. He earned his bachelor’s degree in recreation management in 1994 and his master’s degree in public administration in 1996 from Columbus State University. Davis lives on Lake Harding off the Chattahoochee River in Salem, Alabama. He is single and enjoys water sports, golf and spending time with family and friends.
