Cougars Open With 292, Swanepoel Shoots 72 in South/Southeast Regional First Round
Wilson, N.C. -- The Columbus State men's golf team posted a team total 292 (+8) in the opening round of the 54-hole 2010 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional at the Wilson Country Club on Monday. CSU trails first round leader by Lander (282) by 10 shots. Barry is a shot back at 283, followed by Nova Southeastern (285), St. Leo (288), and Lynn (289). The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not on an advancing team will qualify for the finals on May 18-21 at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind.
Valdosta State's Chesley Gunn shot the best round on Monday with a 4-under 67 and leads by a shot over Lander's Bryan Newton and Barton's Daniel Claytor. Six other players shot 69s.
VSU and Queens University of Charlotte are tied for sixth at 291. The Cougars, Florida Southern, and Georgia College are tied for eighth at 292. Belmont Abbey is 11th at 293, while host Barton shot 294 and is tied for 12th with North Alabama. Flagler and Rollins are tied for 14th at 295. Newberry and West Florida are tied for 16th at 297 with Lincoln Memorial (302), Arkansas Tech (305), and Armstrong Atlantic State (307) rounding out the 20-team field.
CSU was led by its three-headed South African connection. Stephen Swanepoel carded a 1-over 72 and is tied for 22nd in the 108-player field. Steven Paine and Justin Grice each posted 73s and are tied for 37th. Ben Kishigian overcame an early double bogey and finished at 74 (T 48). Junior Jeremy Britt struggled early, but rebounded with an 1-under closing nine to finish at 76 (T 76).
The second round gets started tomorrow for CSU at 8:20 A.M. as Jeremy Britt tees off on hole #1 at the Par 71, 6839 yard Wilson Country Club.
