Cougars Post 285 on Tuesday, Sit in Seventh Place After Two Rounds at South/Southeast Regional
Wilson, N.C. -- The Columbus State men's golf team inched itself up the leaderboard on Tuesday and is in seventh place after two rounds at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional. CSU, who shot 292 on Monday, fired a team total 285 and is five shots back of fifth place Lander (282-290) at 577. Lynn (289-275) and Barry (283-281) are tied for the lead at 564. Nova Southeastern is a shot back at 565 (285-280) and Florida Southern is fourth at 567 (292-275). The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not on an advancing team will qualify for the finals on May 18-21 at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind.
Nova's Bobby Bode (69-68) and Barton's Daniel Claytor (68-69) are tied for the lead at 137 (-5). Four other players are a shot back at 138. Lynn's Devin Kay, Florida Southern's Matt Stauch, and Florida Tech's Zach Potter each carded 6-under 66s for the low round of the day.
Sixteen of the 20 teams shot 290 or better on Tuesday and 21 players shot in the 60s at the Par 71, 6839 yard Wilson Country Club layout. Six of the top eight teams are from the state of Florida.
St. Leo is in sixth place at 574, followed by CSU at 577. West Florida and Barton are tied for eighth at 578. Queens University of Charlotte and North Alabama are tied for 10th at 579 and Belmont Abbey is 12th at 580. Rollins is 13th at 581, Flagler is 14th at 585, and Georgia College & State, ranked #2 in Golfstat, is 15th at 586. Newberry, Armstrong Atlantic State, and Valdosta State are tied for 16th, with Lincoln Memorial and Arkansas Tech rounding out the 20-team field.
Justin Grice led the CSU attack on Tuesday with a solid 1-under 70 and his tied for 25th at 143 (73-70). Sophomore Steven Paine carded an even-par 71 and his two-day total of 144 (73-71) puts him in a tie for 35th position. Ben Kishigian followed up his 74 on Monday with a stellar 71 on Tuedsay and is tied for 44th with teammate Stephen Swanepoel (72-73) at 145. Jeremy Britt couldn't close his round off and stumbled to a 79 and is tied for 99th at 155 (76-79).
