Cougar Netters Split Opening Matches over the Weekend

Columbus, Ga. -- The Columbus State men's tennis team finally worked around the weather and got in two matches over the weekend, falling in a hard-fought match to Division I Samford by a 4-3 count, and defeating Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday 8-1. The Samford match was played indoors due to the weather in Birmingham, while Sunday's match also took place in Birmingham against UAH.
In the Samford match CSU won three singles matches and one doubles match. Playing by Division I rules, the doubles count for a single, point, therefore Samford took the match by the 4-3 count. CSU got singles wins from Gordan Divljak (#3), Diego Motivar (#5) and Filip Cojbasic (#6), while Frank Suarez lost at number one in a third-set tie-breaker. Olivier Simonet also took his opponent to three sets at #2, as did Christophe Noblet at #4.
In doubles, Suarez and Noblet picked up a win at #1, but the other two pairs fell in close matches to close out the point.
On Sunday, CSU fared much better against fellow Division II foe Alabama-Huntsville. The Cougars won all six singles matches, with five of those coming in straight sets and one by default at #6. UAH managed to win one doubles match at #2 where Simonet and Divljak were defeated, but Suarez-Noblet and Cojbasic-Motivar took relatively easy wins.
CSU (1-1) next hosts Morehouse College on Wednesday at the Blackmon Tennis Center on the CSU campus.
