CSU Shooters Sweep Air and Smallbore Competitions at NCAA Sectional in Charleston
Charleston, S.C. - Columbus State's first-year rifle program made a name for itself in a big way on Saturday and Sunday, sweeping both the Air Rifle and Smallbore competitions as the NCAA Sectionals hosted by The Citadel. CSU will now have to wait until the other sectionals are completed to see if its scores will earn a berth in the NCAA Rifle Championships next month in Fort Worth, Texas. CSU competed against Clemson, The Citadel, Georgia Military College, Mercer, and NC State.
"I am
extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of this team," said
CSU head coach Mike Greene. "The hard work and dedication to
practice and improve all season paid off in this competition this
weekend. We now know we belong here and can compete on the same
level with well-established programs."
"We would
also like to say a special thank you to Army Marksmanship Unit at
Fort Benning. Without their support and assistance, this first
season would not have been possible and this team would not have
been as prepared as they were for this level of competition," added
Greene.
In the Air
Rifle competition on Saturday, CSU posted a team score of 2306 and
nipped North Carolina State by one point. The Cougars' Jon Hall was
the top shooter in the competition as he posted a score of 592.
Chris Clemmons was third at 580 and Juli Yoder shot a personal best
578 which was tied for fourth.
In
Sunday's Smallbore competition, CSU again prevailed over the more
established programs to sweep both competitions. The Cougar
marksmen shot a team total of 2255 to best NC State by five points.
Jon Hall again was the top shooter in the competition as he posted
a score of 581. April Dunn took third place with a score of
565.
CSU, with
a team total of 4561 in the two-day sectional, will now await the
results of the other sectional meets to see if its performance in
Charleston was good enough for nationals berth. Several of the
other sectional meets had to be postponed by the winter storms
around the country, so it will take up to a week to learn the
team's fate. Texas Christian University will serve as host of the
NCAA Rifle Championships in Fort Worth on March 12-13,
2010.
