London, England – Former Columbus State University rifle team member Jonathan Hall shot a 592 to finish in 27th place in the qualification round of the men's 10-meter air rifle event at the 2012 London Olympics Monday morning at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London.
With only the top eight scores advancing, Hall failed to qualify for the final round.
Hall began the day with a perfect 100 in the first series and he followed with a 98 and 100 in series two and three, respectively. However, competing against the top shooters in the world, the former Cougar shot a 96 in series four which dropped his score out of qualification contention.
The 2010 NCAA air rifle national champion wrapped up his Olympic debut with back-to-back 99s to finish with a score of 592.
Hall represented his country well as he was the highest American finisher. Fellow American Matthew Emmons finished in 35th place with a score of 590.
Niccolo Campriani of Italy, who won the 2011 NCAA air rifle national championship which was hosted by CSU, and Alin George Moldoveanu of Romania both tied the Olympic record in the event by shooting 599s in the qualification round, one point shy of a perfect score.
In the medal round, Moldoveanu just edged past the world's top shooter Campriani as the Romanian posted a total score of 702.1 to win the gold. Campriani took home the silver with a score of 701.5 while Gagan Narang of India grabbed the bronze.
