Three CSU softball Players Earn All-Academic Team Honors
Columbus, GA - Three Columbus State University
softball players have been named to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference
All-Academic Softball team announced late Tuesday by the league
office in Augusta. Senior catcher Sarah Moore
was selected for the 1st Team, while sophomores Carrie Jones
(3B) and Amanda Wheeless (OF) earned 2nd Team honors.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1)
participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either
a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.20 cumulative
grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one
full academic year at his or her current institution. The Peach
Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee and select the
teams.
Moore, a biology major from Smiths Station, carries a 3.72
grade-point average and plans to enter medical school after earning
her undergraduate degree at CSU. She was second on the team in
hitting this season with a .326 average, smacking 13 doubles, two
homers, and driving home 28 runs - also second on the team. She
spent most of the season behind the plate, but also saw time in the
outfield for coach Brad
Huskisson.
Jones, a former Shaw High standout, was limited to 35 games this
season after preseason surgery, but was productive at the plate and
solid at third base. She batted .269 with seven doubles, two homers
and 12 RBI on the season and also scored 16 runs. She is a health
science major at CSU and boasts an impressive 3.92 GPA.
Wheeless, a sophomore from Woodstock is majoring in early childhood
education. She started 57 games in center field for CSU this
season, hitting .260 with seven doubles, 10 RBI and 22 runs scored.
She carries a 3.80 GPA.
