CSU Closes UWG Invitational with Two Wins on Sunday
Carrollton, Ga. -- Columbus State closed out the West Georgia Invitational on a positive note Sunday, winning both its contests. CSU defeated Anderson 9-2 and North Alabama 2-1 to now stand at 9-11 overall on the season.
Against Anderson, CSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Kristi Bullard clubbed a three-run homer to stake the Cougars to the lead and get them off and running.
Another three-spot, this time in the bottom of the third, doubled the margin. It was Bullard again who supplied the big hit with her second three-run jack of the game to make it 6-0.
After Anderson scored two in the fourth, CSU added a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-2 and Rocky Hemmer blasted a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 9-2.
Bullard got the pitching win, pitching five innings. Kelsey Gilliam finished the final two innings. Bullard finished with two hits and six RBI, while Carrie Jones had a pair of singles. CSU had six hits as a team.
In the nightcap, CSU fought back from injuries to both middle infielders in the top of the first inning to post a 2-1 win. Brittany Leverett tweaked her knee trying to beat out a groundball, and one batter later Christie Thompson injured her leg sliding into second. That meant CSU had to play the contest with five freshmen in the lineup and only one returning player in the order.
The Cougars got a run in the top of the third to take the early lead. Carrie Jones, that lone returning player, drove in Keeley Kennedy with the run in the third on a single up the middle. CSU extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth. Melanie Trevathan laid down a bunt single and Carrie Jones reached on a fielder's choice error. The runners moved up on passed ball and then Trevathan scored on another errant pitch to make it 2-0.
UNA got its lone run off CSU starter Brittni McCall on a solo homer. Jennifer Isasi came on and pitched a scoreless seventh for the save. McCall allowed five hits and struck out four to pick up the win.
CSU hits the road again and will make a two-day swing through South Carolina on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Cougars play at Erskine on Tuesday and then open Peach Belt Conference play on Wednesday at Francis Marion.
