Hemmer, Leverett Named to All-Peach Belt Conference Teams in Softball
Florence, S.C. - The Peach Belt Conference held its annual softball awards banquet on Thursday in Florence, South Carolina, site of the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The 2010 All-Conference teams were announced and included a pair of Columbus State players.
Catcher Rocky Hemmer, a junior from Byron, Georgia, was named the 1st Team catcher and senior shortstop Brittany Leverett (Appling, Ga.) was named the 2nd Team shortstop in the voting by the league's coaches.
Hemmer posted a .340 batting average on the season which was good for second on the team. She had 10 doubles, three homers, and drove in 22 runs on the year. Hemmer posted 13 multi-hit games this season, including a pair of three-hit games, and tied with Christie Thompson for the longest hitting streak at eight games. She also had five two-RBI games.
Leverett, a four-year starter at shortstop, had her most productive year in 2010. The senior hit .313 with a school-record 17 homers. She had four double son the season with 38 RBI, and led the team with 43 runs scored. She also led the team in walks with 41 (also a single-season record) and in slugging percentage at .733. Her .475 on-base average was also tops among the team's starters. She produced 11 multi-hit games to go with eight multi-RBI games with one four-RBI game (3-15 vs. Albany State), a five-RBI game (2-28 vs. Lincoln Memorial) and one six-RBI game (3-20 vs. Flagler). Leverett leaves CSU as the all-time leader in career homers with 40 in her four years.
UNC Pembroke's Jelena Shaw was named Player of the Year, and her teammate, Holly Berry, earned Freshman of the Year honors. North Georgia hurler Sarah Phillips was named Pitcher of the Year and her coach, Mike Davenport, was named Coach of the Year. NGC enters tourney play at 41-0 and ranked number one in the nation.
