COLUMBUS – The Columbus State softball team built a 9-0 lead and cruised to a 14-2 victory over Miles Sunday afternoon in game 10 of the Hughston Sports Clinic at Cougar Field. The Lady Cougars improve to 6-1 on the year while Miles remains winless at 0-6.
Morgan Knight began the game off with a walk and stole second base. Knight moved up to third base on a Branigan Wix slap hit to the third base man. With the infield not paying attention to her, Wix took second base putting both runners in scoring position. Kori Waugh helped her own cause lacing a single up the middle plating Knight and Wix. Courtney Darr brought in the final run of the inning on a RBI single to leftfield.
The first two hitters got on for Columbus State to start off the second inning before the next two batters reached on fielder's choice keeping runners on first and second. Wix and Casey Googe moved up to second and third base on a wild pitch and later scored on a throwing error by the Miles third baseman that went up the first base line. Rocky Hemmer brought in Waugh with a RIB single giving CSU a 6-0 lead after two innings. Knight added a three-run homerun in the third frame upping the Lady Cougars advantage to 9-0.
Miles scored their two runs of the game in the bottom half of the third inning on a double-steal and a RBI single by Kendra Ward. It was the only two runs the Bears scored against Columbus State all weekend.
The Cougars added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings, tallying two runs in the fourth and closing out the game with a three-run outburst in the fifth. A Knight double pushed across one run and the other came via a Miles error in the fourth inning, making it 11-2 at that point. Doubles by Hemmer and Melanie Trevathan produced a pair of runs in the fifth, and those were sandwiched around an RBI single from Darr to make the final 14-2.
Waugh and Jennifer Isasi combined to allow just four hits in the game for CSU. Waugh took the win with three innings of work. She allowed both Bears runs on three hits and two walks with one strikeout. Isasi tossed the final two innings allowing just one hit and one walk.
Knight, Hemmer and Rubio collected three hits each for the Cougars. Knight drove home four runs, while Waugh, Hemmer and Darr each plated two. CSU collected eight hits in the contest.
Columbus State will play the final game of the Hughston Sports Clinic Classic this evening when it faces off against West Alabama. The Tigers gave CSU their only loss of the season in a wild one Saturday afternoon, 12-11. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
