Columbus – Mollie Russell surrendered two unearned runs in a complete game effort as Columbus State dropped its second straight game to No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne by a score of 2-0 Saturday afternoon.  The contest was part of the Hughston Sports Clinic Classic play at Cougar Field in Columbus, Georgia.

After a scoreless first for both sides, Lenoir-Rhyne was able to take advantage of some extra outs to post the only runs of the ballgame.  Russell struck out Sarah Atkins before issuing a walk to Jessica Fellmeth.  A sacrifice bunt moved Fellmeth up to second.  Brittany Coursen then hit a soft grounder to the right-side of Russell who fielded the ball and fired it to first, but the throw pulled Morgan Staffins off the bag keeping the inning alive.

Russell appeared to be out of the jam striking out Shania Johnson but the ball got away on the swing and miss allowing Johnson to reach first base and Fellmeth to cross home.  A single by Kristin Lackey to rightfield plated Coursen for the final run of the contest.

CSU had a golden opportunity to notch a couple runs on the scoreboard in the third inning but were unable to do so.  Taylor Turner began the inning with a single to leftfield.  Kristen Gregory then reached on an error by the pitcher followed by a perfectly placed slap hit on a hit-and-run by Sydney Finley loading the bases with no outs.  Unfortunately for the Lady Cougars, the next three hitters all flew out in the infield ending the rally.

Columbus State had another opportunity later in the sixth inning again getting their first two hitters on in the inning.  Morgan Knight walked proceeded by Nina Rubio being hit by a pitch.  Kara Gordon struck out for the first out of the inning before Casey Googe ripped a ball to the shortstop who made the catch and doubled off Knight at second.

Russell (1-1) tossed seven innings giving up two unearned runs on four hits and three walks.  The right-hander registered 11 strikeouts in the losing effort.  Finley, Staffins and Turner picked up the lone hits for the Lady Cougars.

Dawon Millwood fired a three-hit shutout for L-R issuing one walk while striking out eight.  Carlee Carpenter went 2-for-4 while Lackey picked up the lone RBI of the contest.

CSU plays the final contest of the Hughston Sports Clinic Classic later this evening in a non-conference matchup with Augusta State.
