Lady Cougars Defeat Young Harris 14-5

Spartanburg, SC – The Columbus State University softball team scored a season high 14 runs while collecting 17 hits en route to a 14-5 victory over Young Harris in the Lady Cougar's second game of the Mid-South Classic. The tournament is being played at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, SC.

The 17 hits by Columbus State was also a season best.
 
CSU (12-7) scored at least one run in every inning besides the fifth.

The Lady Cougars scored two in the first thanks to two walks. With two-outs and two runners in scoring position, Morgan Staffins laced a single through the left side of the infield knocking in both runners.

Back-to-back singles led the second inning off for Columbus and a Nina Rubio single loaded the bases with one-out. After a strikeout for the second out of the frame, Casey Googe skied a ball into the outfield but the centerfield dropped the easy out allowing all three runs to score to give CSU a 5-0 lead. Kara Gordon ripped a double to score Googe for the final run of the frame.

Branigan Wix doubled home a run in the third before Young Harris (8-9) responded with two runs of their own. With two-outs and runners on second and third, Jennifer Watford singled into centerfield scoring two YHC players.

The Lady Cougars put the game away in the top of the fourth as they pushed across five runs. Morgan Knight led the inning off with a single extending her hitting streak to 12-games. Googe got her first hit of the day advancing Knight to second while Gordon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Staffins knocked in a run with a single before Taylor Turner had a two-run hit to centerfield upping the score to 10-2.

During Knight's hitting streak, she is batting .500 (21-for-42) with 11 RBIs. 

The middle of the order got it done for the Lady Cougars as Morgan Knight, Casey Googe, Kara Gordon and Morgan Staffins went a combined 9-for-16 with seven runs batted in.

Both Taylor Turner and Kristen Carr pitched three innings for CSU. Turner tossed the first three innings allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five. Carr (3-0) picked up the win allowing three unearned runs on two hits.

Emily Wilson and Jennifer Watford both 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Mountain Lions.
