Smith Named PBC Player of the Week

Columbus, Ga. -- Columbus State senior post player Phebe Smith has been named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week for women's basketball for the week ending January 17. The announcment was made by the league office in Augusta on Monday afternoon, and marks the second time this season that Smith has earned the award.

Smith was merely great in the first two games CSU played last week, then she moved into the 'unbelievable' category with her 36-point, 17-rebound explosion at #18 Francis Marion. The 2009 PBC Player of the Year was double- and triple-teamed to 12 points against both Clayton State and UNC Pembroke, but grabbed 17 and 14 rebounds, respectively. She then connected on 12 of 17 field goals and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds (of her 17) against FMU. The 36 points is tied for the highest in the league this season while her 17 boards is the second-most this year. She also shot 57% from the field for the week and had five blocked shots (also tied for a PBC season-high) at FMU, averaging 2.7 per game. Currently leads the PBC in both scoring and rebounding and is third in field goal percentage and second in blocks.

Smith leads the Lady Cougars back into action on Wednesday evening at the Lumpkin Center as GCSU comes in for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
