Lady Cougars Pull Away Late for 76-60 Win over Flagler

Columbus, Ga. -- Columbus State out-scored visiting Flagler 28-14 over the final nine minutes of the game on Thursday to break open a tight game and cruise to a 76-60 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball win at the Lumpkin Center. The win keeps CSU firmly in third place in the Peach Belt Conference West Division with a 13-9 overall mark and a 7-5 tally in PBC play.

Flagler (7-15, 2-11) led for most of the first six minutes of the game, and the two teams then took turns in front over the next four minutes before CSU finally took the lead for good. Trailing 20-19 with 9:53 left, Nakita Holt hit a short jumper that put CSU in front 21-20 at the 9:22 mark. Although CSU would never trail again in the contest, the game remained tight.

Flagler cut the margin back to one point, 26-25, after Charlsea Owen's jumper with 4:03 left, but CSU would out-score the Saints 13-4 the rest of the way and take a 39-29 lead into halftime. CSU score the last six points of the half, including a Turelle Jones layup with two seconds left to account for the double-digit margin.

CSU ran out to as much as a 14-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Saints did not go away. Taking advantage of some lackluster play by CSU, Flagler trimmed the margin to three points using a 15-4 run. Two Jalisa Foster free-throws capped the run and made the score 49-46 with 11:19 to play.

The Lady Cougars then began to pull their game together on both ends of the floor and extended the lead back to nine points, using a 8-2 spurt that was capped by Monique Jefferson's three-pointer with 8:44 left to make it 57-48.

Flagler would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way. A 9-0 run by CSU took the wind out of the Saints' sails and put CSU up 68-52 with 5:28 left after a steal of an inbounds pass and a layup by Renee Jackson. The Saints never threatened again.

Jefferson ended the evening with 19 points as she went 8-13 from the floor, including three treys. Phebe Smith continued her strong play, scoring 18 points to go with 20 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Holt added 13 points and Turell Jones tallied 10 for CSU. The Lady Cougars shot 42 percent in the game and dominated the glass by a 53-36 count.

Chanti Beckett led Flagler with 18 points, 11 of which came at the free-throw line. She also added nine rebounds. Owen added 11 points, three assists and two steals. The Saints shot just 30 percent on the night.

CSU plays the second of a two-game home stand on Saturday, hosting Armstrong Atlantic State for Homecoming. Tip-off is set for 1:30 PM  in the Lumpkin Center.
