Lady Cougars Struggle Offensively, Fall 55-43 at GCSU

Milledgeville, Ga. -- Columbus State could never quite get into an offensive rhythm and All-American Phebe Smith was held to just 10 points by the tight Georgia College defense as the Bobcats took a 55-43 Peach Belt Conference win. The loss keeps CSU (15-10, 9-6) in back of GCSU and Clayton State in third place in the PBC West Division.

In the first half, neither team could put together any consistency on the offensive end. CSU trailed by just one point, 9-8, after the first five minutes of play. The Bobcats then took a two-point lead, 11-9, less than a minute later and neither team would score for over three minutes. GCSU finally got a bucket from Chimere Jordan to go up 13-9, only to have CSU pull back within two a half-minute later on a Monique Jefferson jumper.

GCSU then used an 11-2 run to put some breathing room between it and the Lady Cougars. Jordan's three-pointer with 5:50 left in the half gave the Bobcats their biggest lead at 24-13. CSU would trim the margin back to five with 1:43 left in the half on a Nikki Urbizo trey, but went  into halftime down 30-23.

CSU scored the first five points of the second half to get within two, those coming on a Jefferson trey and a Nakita Holt layup to make it 30-28. GCSU then scored seven straight points to lengthen the margin to nine points, the last of those coming on Antoinette Reames' layup with 15:57 to play.  CSU got as close as six points, 45-39 after an Ashley Stafford layup with 4:22 left, but the Bobcats slammed the door with an 8-0 run that gave them their biggest lead at 53-39. Two Shandrea Moore free-throws capped that run with 2:06 left. CSU would score just four more points the rest of the way.

Smith and Jefferson scored 10 points each to lead the CSU offense as the Lady Cougars shot just 34 percent on the day. Smith was just 3-9 from the floor as everything she did was contested by at least two defenders. She was also held to just six rebounds and did not record a double-double for the first time in the last six games. Jefferson had a 4-8 day from the floor, including a pair of treys. CSU won the rebounding battle 36-34 but committed 24 turnovers in the game.

Jordan led GCSU (18-7, 11-4) with 17 points. Tammeshia Law added 15 and Reames 11. Law led the Bobcats in rebounding with seven. GCSU shot 38 percent in the game and committed just 11 turnovers.

CSU plays its final home game of the season on Wednesday evening at the Lumpkin Center, hosting Georgia Southwestern. This game will be part of "Pink Out" night at CSU for Breast Cancer Awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of this endeavor that is a part of a national awareness for breast cancer research sponsored by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Game time is set for 5:30 PM.
