CSU's Phebe Smith Named to Daktronics All-Southeast Region First Team

Columbus, Ga. -- The awards keep coming for Columbus State senior forward Phebe Smith. A week after earning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, Smith on Wednesday was named to the Daktronics All-Southeast Region First Team. The honor automatically places her name on the upcoming Daktronics Division II All-America ballot.
Smith, last year's WBCA Southeast Region Player of the Year, has become the most decorated women's player in CSU history. She has earned consecutive PBC Player of the Year awards, was the school's first-ever First Team All-American, and now has earned consecutive All-Region awards - one from the WBCA in 2009, and this year's honor from Daktronics.
Smith was edged out for Daktronics Southeast Region Player of the Year by Tusculum's Jasmine Gunn. Gunn had an outstanding season, averaging 20.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, five assists, and three steals per game. Smith, the target for every opposing team's defense all season, fought through double- and triple-team schemes to post 17.8 points and 12.1 rebounds per contest.
Smith leaves CSU with her name firmly entrenched in the record books. Her point total of 1,122 is fifth on the all time scoring list and her 692 rebounds places her third in school history. She is the only two-year player to grace the top five in each of those two categories. In addition to those marks, she is now the all-time leader in blocked shots for a career with 78, surpassing the old mark of 65 set in one season by Aja Brown in 2001-02.
Voting will take place for the Daktronics All-America Teams over the next week by the membership of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
