Anthony Leads Way as CSU's Women's Golf Program Gets First Season Off and Running

Raeford, NC - Columbus State's resident "team mom" hit the first shot in the history of the women's golf program on Monday morning, officially christening the sport at the Battle at the Bayonet hosted by UNC Pembroke. The 54-year-old Hatcher cleared the first-hole hazard and put that first shot in the fairway for CSU and her teammates followed with a good opening round. CSU sits third in the four-team field, just nine shots out of second place.

Kimesha Anthony, a heralded amateur player from Antigua, was impressive for CSU on Monday. She fired nines of 39-36 to shoot 75 and is tied for the individual lead with South Carolina Beaufort's Adrianna Saavedra. Anthony had six bogeys and three birdies on the day. Heather Altiser also posted a top-10 round, as well, shooting 38 on the front and coming home with a 44 for an 82. That round puts her in ninth place individually.

Alex Schluter is just outside the top 10 after shooting 84, good for 13th position. Ashley Garrett shot 90 and is tied for 18th. Hatcher finished the day at 105 and is in 25th position.

"I am very proud of the way we came out and competed," said head coach Brian Padgett. "We learned a lot about ourselves on the course and we put ourselves in a position to improve tomorrow. We finished out the round well and that should give us some confidence going into Tuesday's final round."

Anthony drained a long putt on 18 to finish strong, while Altiser finished with three consecutive pars and Schluter finished par-birdie. Schluter's approach on 18 came to rest just a foot from the hole for the easy birdie.

USC Beaufort leads the team standings at 311, while host UNCP is second at 322. CSU is third, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne at 343. The tournament has 25 total players playing as some teams brought only individual players to the event.

The final round will get underway on Tuesday at the Bayonet at Puppy Creek, a par-72, 5,841-yard layout. CSU will begin its final round at 8:50 AM. Related Item: Box Score
