Lady Cougars Close out 2010 Spring Campaign with Two Terrific Wins

Decatur, GA. -   At the Georgia State Soccer complex, the CSU Women's Soccer team posted two wins on the final weekend of Spring competition. The Lady Cougars defeated Kennesaw State University 1 - 0 in the first game and then posted a 1 - 0 result against a charged Georgia State Panthers side in game 2.

The Lady Cougars played the match of the Spring campaign against Kennesaw State University. CSU was dominating throughout the entire match with fluid attacking soccer, suffocating defense and the Kennesaw State Owls women's soccer team goalkeeper coming up big on several chances at goal from the Cougars. It was in the 52nd minute of the match that junior KC MacEachern was able to knock in a cross from sophomore Kelsey Bass to score the eventual game winner. Bass was able to break free on the right flank and drilled a cross into MacEachern who one timed a shot to the back of the net. In addition to fabulous play from MacEachern, the Lady Cougars saw outstanding play up front from juniors Stephanie Parrish and Leslie Mathews.  In the middle of the park, junior Kate Walton and freshmen Kayla Brown, Kelsey Bass, and Kylie Donohue turned in strong performances as well.  The Lady Cougars showed trademark stellar defensive work in the back with twins Laurel and Jordan Mckenzie and Catherin Lovin and Kim Gaughan. Mary Mancin and Michelle Krengel split time in goal for the shutout win.

Game 2 started 20 minutes after game 1 and an exhausted CSU side stepped on the field to square off with a very strong Georgia State squad. Georgia State played stifling defense and the Lady Cougars fought through the fatigue for 60 minutes. Junior forward Leslie Mathews got the Lady Cougars on the board first in the 15th minute of the match with a fantastic finish after she fought through a strong challenge and broke in behind the Panther backline to beat the keeper to the far post. A very nice combination in the midfield left the ball on the foot of freshman midfielder Kylie Donohue and she placed the pass at Mathews feet who then turned to beat the Panther central defenders and got in behind to finish for the game winner. Once again, the Lady Cougars played very well on defense giving up only 6 shots in the game and securing yet another shutout.

The Lady Cougars finish the 2010 Spring campaign with a 6-1-0 record, falling only to English Women's Premier League Champions Arsenal Ladies FC in England. CSU will open play in the Fall of 2010 at the Walden Soccer Complex with South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry College on Friday, September 3 and Gulf South Conference rival University of West Georgia on Saturday, September 5 during the 7th Annual Cougar Invitational.
