Greeneville, TN – No. 16 Columbus State opened the 2011 season taking on Southern Indiana for the first time in school history and the two sides played to a scoreless draw Friday night in Greeneville, TN as part of the Tusculum Kickoff Tournament.
It was the first game of the season for both teams as they both move to 0-0-1 on the year.
CSU controlled the offensive attack for the majority of the contest but was unable to crack the Screaming Eagles defense that returned 20 players from last year's 12-6-1 team and allowed just 17 goals.
The Lady Cougars came out aggressive from the start as they took the game's first three shots and also had three corner kicks before USI had their first shot attempt which was saved by Mary Mancin. CSU outshot Southern Indiana 6-3 in the first half, but Kylie Donohue's shot in the final minute was the only one on target.
Columbus State continued to press forward in the second half as they outshot USI 9-3 in the second half as well, but was unable to find the back of the net. Kiana Nicholson had the best scoring opportunity for either side in the 76th minute as the freshman hit a rocket off the crossbar. Two minutes later Emily Husted had her shot attempt denied by the Southern Indiana goalkeeper.
CSU had 4-1 advantage in shots in the two overtime periods and ended the contest with a 19-7 edge. The Lady Cougars also had a decisive advantage in corner kicks taking all 11 in the game.
Mancin played the entire game in goal for Columbus State making four saves to keep the clean sheet. Nicholson led the team in shots tallying seven in the game while Stephanie Lowery was right behind her with five.
Stephanie Bodamer picked up six saves for the Screaming Eagles as she played all 110 minutes in net. Jessica Gates was the lone USI player to have more than one shot attempt.
