CSU Tennis Teams Earn Sweep of Flagler on Sunday
Columbus, Ga. -- Columbus State's men's and women's tennis teams - each ranked #8 in the nation - rebounded from losses to top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday to defeat Flagler College on Sunday at the Blackmon Tennis Center. The CSU women took a 9-0 win, while the men earned a tough 5-4 decision.
The Sunday wins evened the Peach Belt Conference records of both teams at 1-1. The CSU men are now 5-3 overall, while the women are 9-2.
The Lady Cougar netters won the doubles points easily to go up 3-0 and then won all of the singles matches in straight sets except one. Caterina Kiefer's match with Jennifer Saviano went three sets as Kiefer won the first set 6-2, fell in the second 6-3, and then dominated the super set 10-2 to take the match.
In men's action, the #8 team of Frank Suarez and Christophe Noblet were upset by Flagler's David Cotrone and Gino Ramirez by an 8-2 score in doubles. The Cougars took the other two matches in doubles to lead 2-1 heading into singles play.
Flagler won three of the top four positions in singles and were poised to upset the Cougars. Olivier Simonet was the only player in the top four to win for CSU, taking out Ramirez in three sets. Noblet and Diego Motivar clinched the match for CSU with straight set wins at numbers five and six singles, both winning in dominating fashion.
Both teams return to the courts next Sunday at North Georgia in another PBC match.
