CSU Men and Women Advance to PBC Semifinals With Wins on Friday
Jonesboro, Ga. -- The Columbus State men and women each advanced on Friday in the opening round of the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Tennis Championships. The Cougar men defeated Augusta State 5-1 and the CSU women won by an identical 5-1 score over Georgia College & State University. Both CSU teams were the #2 seeds entering Friday's play.
On the men's side, CSU held a 2-1 lead after doubles as Augusta State's Bernardo Fernandes and Henrique Boturao defeated Frank Suarez and Christophe Noblet at the number one spot. The Cougars got wins from Suarez, Daniel Stomberg, and Noblet to halt the match during singles play.
On the women's side, CSU took a 3-0 lead into singles play after dominating doubles play. The Lady Cougars dropped just one game in the three doubles matches to go up 3-0. GCSU got a win at #1 singles as Diane Danna defeated Loriane Favoretto 6-2, 6-1, but CSU got wins from Sofia Persson and Caterina Kiefer to close out the match.
The CSU men will face off against Georgia College at 5 p.m. on Saturday, while the women will take on host Clayton State in the semifinal round as both teams try to advance to Sunday's championship matches.
