No. 12 Columbus State Defeats Shorter 8-1 in Season Opener

Rome, GA – The 12th ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team had no trouble opening the season as they defeated Shorter 8-1 Friday afternoon. The match was played at the Rome-Floyd Tennis Center in Rome.
Shorter entered the match as the 15th ranked NAIA team in the nation.
Number one doubles was the only tightly played doubles match as Paola Cigui and Milica Tomic defeated Candice Laurent and Iesha Holton 8-6. The Lady Cougars dominated number two and three doubles losing just one game. At second doubles, All-American Madeline Johnson and newcomer Carolin Weikard took down Aurore Beltrando and Aurelie De Montjou 8-1. Sandra Jung and Olivera Jokic pitched the shutout against Margot Vetter and Alicia Gallard defeating the duo 8-0.
Cigui continued playing well in her first day as a Lady Cougar as she defeated Laurent at first singles 6-3, 6-0. The 36th ranked player in the nation, Weikard, defeated Holton 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles. Tomic won her first match of the year as a single player defeating Beltrando 6-3, 6-3.
The only Shorter victory of the day came at number four singles as De Montjou took down Johnson 6-1, 6-4. Jokic was at it again blanking Gallard 6-0, 6-0. In the final match of the day, Andrea Redrado won the first set 6-2 and needed one extra game in the second set of action to defeated Vetter 6-2, 7-5.
Columbus State will open their home portion of the schedule on Wednesday, February 8 against Georgia Southwestern. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center.
Note: The Stillman match, which was previously scheduled for Sunday, February 5 has been moved to Tuesday, February 21 because of predicted weather.
