No. 9 Columbus State Women’s Tennis Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

Altamonte Springs, Fla. – For the second time in the past three seasons, the ninth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team is back in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals as the Lady Cougars defeated 46th-ranked Lewis 5-1 in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 on Wednesday. The match took place at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. 

Columbus State will now face fifth-ranked Hawaii Pacific on Thursday in the quarterfinals. The match is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

It is the fourth time in program history that CSU has reached the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals. The Lady Cougars have never advanced to a national semifinal match. 

CSU (22-4) gained the early advantage in the match winning two of the three doubles matches. At first doubles, Paola Cigui and Camila Tobar blanked Zsofia Kranczicki and Megan Nguyen 8-0. Beatriz Leon and Olivera Tadijin tried to duplicate their teammates results at third doubles winning their match 8-1 over Jill Wetmore and Kendra Mills. 

Lewis (16-5) won its lone match of the day at second doubles. Zsofia Lanstiak and Ana Banic edged past Laura Chapman and Olivera Jokic 8-5. 

In singles play, CSU jumped to a lead in all of the matches. Five of the six Lady Cougars won the opening set including Tadijin at sixth singles. Tadijin lost just one game in the first set against Mills before taking the second set 6-2. 

At first singles, third-ranked Cigui collected another win over a ranked foe taking down 29th-ranked Kranczicki 6-1, 6-4. Sixteenth-ranked Leon also notched a big win for the Lady Cougars at second singles winning 6-3, 6-1 against 26th-ranked Lanstiak. 

In the unfinished matches, Tobar was just two games away from collecting a win against Nguyen. She was leading 6-2, 4-1 in the match. Chapman won the first set at fifth singles 6-3 over Wetmore while Jokic dropped a tight 7-5 first set against Banic.
