Evan Isaacs is entering his 10th season as the head men’s
and women’s tennis coach at Columbus State University in
2011-2012. A former Cougar player and graduate assistant coach,
Isaacs is recognized as a top instructor in the game.
Isaacs has guided the women’s team to be one of the best
programs in the nation since taking the reigns at CSU. The
Lady Cougars have been ranked in the top 10 for eight straight
seasons and reached the number four ranking in 2005, its highest
mark since Isaacs took over the program. He has coached 10
All-Americans and 21 All-Conference players. The team is also a
five-time recipient of the All-American Academic Team Award and has
made the NCAA Tournament every year under Isaacs' leadership.
For his team’s great play, he was named the 2010
Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Region Women’s
Coach of the Year. In 2011, the Lady Cougars had another great
season posting a 17-6 record and hosting the NCAA Southeast
Regional.
On the men’s side, Isaacs has gradually transformed the
team, as he took over a winless program the year before his arrival
in 2002 and has turned the team into a national powerhouse. In
2010, Isaacs led the Cougars to a 20-win season for the first time
since Peach Belt Conference play started and had the highest win
total in the conference with eight wins as well. CSU was the host
for the Southeast Regional for the first time as the Cougars
advanced to the national semifinal round before bowing out. Isaacs
led the Cougars to another banner year in 2011 winning 19 matches
and hosting yet another Southeast Regional. After advancing to the
Sweet 16 for the second straight season, the Cougars upset an
undefeated UC San Diego squad and went on to defeated Western New
Mexico to advance to their second straight national semifinal
appearance. There, the Cougars lost a heartbreaking match to the
eventually national champions, Valdosta State. Isaacs was named the
2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Men’s Coach
of the Year.
In all, Coach Isaacs has led the program to six NCAA tournaments
including four straight appearances. He has coached six
All-Americans, 11 All-Conference honorees and one PBC Freshman of
the Year. The team also received the Peach Belt Conference
Sportsmanship Award in 2010. Also in 2011, Isaacs’ top duo of
Christophe Noblet and Gordan Divljak finished the season ranked
second in the nation according to the ITA Poll.
Prior to CSU, Isaacs was a private tennis instructor working in
several different areas. From April of 1998 until his arrival
in Columbus, he was the head professional at Wynlakes Golf and
Country Club in Montgomery, AL. Prior to this, he had brief
stints with Callaway Garden Resorts and Shangri-La Resort in Grove,
OK.
Isaacs earned his undergraduate in Recreational Management (1995)
and graduate degree in Public Administration (1997) from Columbus
State University. He was a two-year member of the tennis
program at CSU. Isaacs played two seasons under legendary
Coach Bal Moore at Jefferson State Community College. They
were ranked ninth in the country in 1992 and 1993 and won the
Alabama State Junior College Championship.
Isaacs and wife Michelle were married in June 2002 and reside in
Columbus. Michelle is a physical therapist working with Select
Physical Therapy in Columbus. The couple has two daughters -
Jessie, born in 2004, and Kendall, born in 2006.
