CSU Women Take Sixth at Mercer Invitational Despite Mishap at Start

Macon, GA - Columbus State's women lost a key runner in a mishap just after the start of the race, but still managed to finish sixth at the Mercer Invitational in Macon on Saturday. The mishap was a spill that took heralded runner Naomi Tanui out of the race and sent her to the hospital for examination after she was essentially trampled on by a hoard of runners.

The rest of the team, running at less that full strength, managed to finish sixth in a very competitive 20-team field.  Brittney Skiles ran an excellent race to finish 4th overall in a PBC leading time of 19:11. Freshman Kelli Arnold continued her rapid adjustment to the college ranks by finishing 10th in an excellent time of 19:58. Those two were supported by the rest of their team with senior Tiara Brown finishing 45th in 21:16, freshman Moneka English finishing 55th in a time of 21:33, junior Ashley Arnold finishing 68th with a time of 22:20.

Kennesaw State won the event with a team total of 75 points, while Florida Southern was second with 110. West Georgia was third, Montevallo fourth, and GCSU fifth in the race. McKenzie Howe of KSU was the individual winner with a time of 17:56.

CSU returns to action on October 10, hosting its own event - the Cougar Invitational - at the Smiths Station Sports Complex.
