CSU Track Teams Finish Regular Season with Strong Showings
Columbus, Ga. -- Columbus State finished off its first-ever regular season with meets at Florida State and Georgia Tech over the past two weekends. Both meets were non-scoring meets for CSU and were used to try and improve or solidify NCAA qualifying times.
At FSU, Shan Crawford improved her NCAA provisional times in the 100 and 200 meters. She ran a time of 11.76 in the 100 and 23.99 in the 200 to improve her qualifying status and also set new personal-bests in both events. She then elevated her time at Georgia Tech and ran an automatic qualifying time of 23.76 in the 200 to clinch a spot in that event at the NCAA Championships in Charlotte.
In the FSU meet, Britney Skiles woin the 1500 meters with a strong final-lap kick in a season best time of 4:46.95. Naomi Tanui was the top collegiate finisher in the 5000 with a time of 18:39.41, finishing third behind two unattached runners. LaQuita Daniel had a personal-best in the 400 at 58:26 (4th place) and RaquishaGivens had a PB in the 100 with a time of 12.46 (6th place).
The 4x100 relay team of Ibu Awoyale, LaQuita Daniel, Raquisha Givens, and Shan Crawford finished third with a time of 48.03 at FSU, then improved that time at Georgia Tech, hitting an NCAA provisional qualifying at 47.40.
On the men's side at FSU, Meshack Koyiaki won the 5000 meters with a tiem of 14:41.23, winning in the final 50 meters in a sprint as he edged an Embry Riddle runner. Nicholas Kering ran a personal-best time of 14:48.39 to finish third. Koyiaki doubled back and rans a solid 1500 meters time of 3:51.72. Koyiaki then improved that time at Georgia Tech, running a 3:50.09 - the third time this season he has come in under the NCAA provisional qualifying time in that event.
Gerald Chichester won the 400 meter hurdles at FSU in a time of 58.06, while John Neill had a season-best time of 4:04.53 in the 1500. Jonathan Jones was fourth in the triple jump with a 13.03 meter jump. Jeremy Williams has a person best in the 400 wtih a time of 49.44 (7th place) and then improved that at Georgia Tech with a 48.61. Chris Patrick (800m - 1:54.73, 3rd place) also ran a season-best at FSU.
The 4x100 relay team of Chichester, Jones, Patrick, Yvens Joseph and Williams finshed fourth at 43.11, while the same group ran in the 4x400 Elite race and finished second with a time of 3:21.11.
The NCAA will release its list of qualifiers for the Nationals in Charlotte on May 25-29 on Wednesday. CSU coach J.D. Evilsizer hopes to have several athletes on that list, joining automatic qualifier Shan Crawford.
